What happens in this segment?

The Business Technology Life Cycle begins with the Discover segment.  Most technology projects need to begin with a search for information:

• What business issue needs to be resolved?
• Is a technological resolution desirable?  Would a technical fix be effective?
• What are the requirements for an effective solution?
• What other factors, such as acquisition and upkeep costs, must be considered?
• What potential solutions are there?
• How well does each solution satisfy our needs?

A surprising number of companies do not invite advice from a technology or financial partner for the Discover segment.  Some projects are indeed fairly straightforward at this stage; others are much more challenging.  In either case it can be beneficial to seek the assistance of specialists, to ensure that all reasonable solutions are considered and explored and to help identify potential implementation or maintenance problems that may not be immediately obvious.  The hands-on knowledge of an experienced provider can often help prevent serious issues later in the project.
